I Ain't the Worst that You've Seen

And now, a musical interlude.

I fear Consort is my age-ish. That kind of weather demands obnoxious music. Mind you, I can only listen to it for about 30 seconds now. The Law of Diminishing Returns is a powerful thing.

As much as I adore you, oh fantabulous Quinn, I must beg ever so politely to differ with you on the song that merits the (dis)honor of dumbest song ever.

The dumbest song ever is, in fact, Who Let the Dogs Out? and I know this because my six year old insisted on playing that particular ditty endlessly on repeat for the better part of a month. It was last month, for the record - couldn't have been February which is mercifully shorter...

Anyhow, *that* is the dumbest song ever. EVER. Sadly, just typing the title has now created another earworm of the Baha Men in my brain. Argh!

Ooh, you have my sympathy. Van Halen sucks.

Consort needs to lose the privilege of choosing music around Daughter for a long time. Anyone who subjects someone they love to Van Halen clearly thinking the situation through.

"Jump" is far too happy to be dumb. But now, when DH starts ranting to me about politics or religion (even though I AGREE with him), I'm gonna distract him with a dumb-song quest. I'd thank you, except...

...I'm now stuck humming the dumbest line ever sung. In "Look What You've Done," by Bread (i.e. old-school whiny emo), a guy bemoaning a recent breakup sings this: "For it's due to the lack of you/that I'm now only half of two."

Yes! Even dumber than "I'll never find the recipe again...again!"

Ha! We were just having this discussion...or actually I was ranting & my sometimes long-suffering, dearly beloved was politely listening. We were in a huge used book/music store that prides itself as being on the now side of cool & which describes it's inner workings thusly: "Each day our experienced staff culls through thousands of books & music items looking for the best, the unusual, the rare, the quirky, the outstanding, the necessary." One would not expect to hear Ricky Nelson on the sound system in such a place & one bland, sleepy-eyed song would only barely be noticed anywhere but they played track after track until I couldn't think and wanted to scream and ask great philosophical questions such as WHY?!! How could one browse peacefully with such inanities coursing through one's brain? And how was this any of those things up there starting with best and ending with necessary? When they got to "Garden Party" I grabbed my dearest & left... a mere shell of my former self. I would nominate any one of those songs as worst song ever. (No offense to R.N. fans intended!)

This was so funny. I admire you for sticking it out. Now, as long as you don't diss Olivia. ;-) hehe

By the way, this is random, but did you ever hear that song "Everything Reminds Me of My Dog." It's this quirky song from a Canadian singer-songwriter Jane Siberry that was also on a Martha Stewart compilation CD. Anyway, I think it's funny and any dog-lover can appreciate it. It reminded me of how I was about my beloved dog Marta. However, after I used it in acting class, people kinda thought I was nuts. haha

It is a sorry song indeed to make 'McArthur Park' seem like musical genius, but VH managed with 'Jump'.

Hi Quinn - I came upon your blog tonight while watching The Goodbye Girl (have ALWAYS loved that movie!) and I have to say, you are still so stinking, dry, sarcastic and FUNNY as you were in this movie. Thanks for the laughs then and now. And, I'm right there with you - Jump? Really?

I just watched Good Bye Girl and had to get to my computer and look you up. I love you in that movie. I was taken back when I saw your age, made me feel really old. I watched your QC report and totally agree with the music and fashion reports. Who would wear it?

I just finished watching The Goodbye Girl for about the 40th time and now of course, know everyone's lines. The perfect casting and I'm so glad to finally find your blog. It's wonderful and now added to my favorites. You were a delightful child and I'm happy to see you all grown up and doing well. Keep up the good work. margie mazzeo
p.s. Loved you on Family, too. Best of everything to you !!!

Just watched "The Goodbye Girl" on TCM w/ my 11 y.o. son. Loved it then, love it still. Only problem? my son wants to know when he can use those same swear words..("when I'm dead",) my response... "Notes From the Underwire"......snorting, laugh out loud funny. You continue to be, a gem.

Back to say thanks! This weekend, stuck in a traffic jam at the end of a four-hour trip, I pulled out this topic and it saved us.

We refined "dumb" into categories (irritating, self-important, inane), discussed whether we could apply "dumb" to everything by one artist or to an entire genre, threatened each other with ear worms and generally had a blast.

And then the kicker: I discovered DH, whom I've known for more than 30 years, LIKES "The Pina Colada Song."

Is this grounds for annulment?

Ah, so other couples DO have this same issue. My marriage is the equivalent of Simon & Garfunkel (me) meet AC/DC (him) and they all live happily ever after. HOW is a mystery that may never be solved but miracles should never be questioned.

Well, back when Jump was in 24/7 rotation, I may have changed the channel after hearing it too often, but now, I find that I pause and listen to all of these songs. Even MacArthur Park, even the Pina Colada song, even jump. How about "I can't drive 55"?- yes. How about "We built this city"- yes. How about ,"Ricky don't lose that number"?- yes. and even... well no, not "afternoon delight" I do draw the line there. Mind you, I never purchased any of them.
